The chips feature Ada Lovelace, the latest mobile-efficient architecture that the company claims breaks energy efficiency barriers in laptop design.
Nvidia officially brings RTX 40-series GPUs to new laptops
Ada Lovelace is based on NVIDIA’s new Ampere architecture, specifically designed to deliver improved power efficiency and performance in laptops. It uses several innovative techniques in other areas to achieve this, including a redesigned streaming multiprocessor and new memory architecture with 5th-generation Max-Q improvements.
NVIDIA says this will result in three times the “power efficiency” of the previous generation at just a third of the total power consumption – a recipe that could potentially help laptop makers achieve longer battery life and more stable thermal temperatures. Even better, these exciting boosts will benefit smaller scale factors.
More power, less weight
For gaming, NVIDIA specifically called out ray-traced games as the biggest beneficiaries of the latest architecture improvements, with an “RT Overdrive” mode showing up to four times better performance in titles like “Cyberpunk 2077.” What does this mean? You’ll be able to enjoy the full graphical fidelity of these games as the developers intended, giving you all the new bells and whistles without taking too much of a hit to framerate. Full DLSS 3 support helps here as well.
But this 40-series launch is also heavily geared towards professional creatives. One of its claims is huge rendering time savings for 3D modeling suites like Blender – a rendering queue that used to take 2 hours on older hardware can now be completed in less than 10 minutes, as stated by NVIDIA. Also, it has dual AV1 encoders for much better live streaming performance and about 50% faster video rendering.
That said, the models that are at the lower end of the 40-series GPUs – comprising the 4050, 4060 and 4070 – fit comfortably within the increasingly popular 14-inch form factor. In years past, you’d have to sacrifice portability for power, but it looks like this ultralight workhouse will be able to double as your gaming laptop, which is a boon for the shoulders of backpack carriers everywhere.
Price and release date
The first 4080 and 4090 gaming laptops will ship on February 8 starting at $1,999, while the 4050 through 4070 models will arrive on February 22 for a starting price of $99. More than 170 40-series models are already in development.
FAQ
Is Nvidia making 40 series GPUs?
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs are blazingly fast for gamers and creators. They are powered by ultra-efficient NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture that offers a quantum leap in both performance and AI-powered graphics.
Will the RTX 3090 come to laptops?
no The RTX 3090 uses about 300 watts, which is about 10 times more than the average laptop. There is no wall adapter that can handle that amount of power.
Will the RTX 4060 remain?
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is an upcoming high-end laptop GPU. It should be based on the AD107 chip and use the Ada Loveless architecture. The RTX 4060 Mobile uses 8 GB of GDDR6 dedicated graphics memory with a clock speed of 16 Gbps and a 96-bit memory bus.
RTX 4090 is coming?
